“A flower blossoms for its own joy.”-Oscar Wilde

What a beautiful true quote…meaning a flower blooms for itself…for its own joy and happiness…not because of others. We do not need anyone else’s permission to blossom nor is anyone else responsible for our transformation. We can buy ourselves flowers simply because we want to . We dont need anyone else’s permission. We buy them because they bring us joy and make us feel love for ourselves.

Buying yourself flowers is a form of self care. No different than gifting yourself a massage. You also deserve a damn good massage. You don’t need to wait for someone to give you one. There are professionals for that. If you want one get one.

I remember the teenage years when February 14th rolled around I would walk by the school office peeking at the beautiful bouquets and secretly hoping that one of them was for me. Maybe it was the romantic in me. Maybe it was the way culture had groomed me to believe that if one of the bouquets were for me it meant I was special or worthy. If only I had seen my self worth and had the confidence to send myself flowers any day of the week for that matter.

In my later years of adulthood when I became more frugal and responsible I remember always thinking that flowers were such a waste of money. Why would I spend money on something that would soon wilt and be no more. The best things in life don’t last forever. That doesnt mean they should be off limits or we shouldn’t enjoy them anyway in fear of loosing them. As I matured I realized purchasing flowers was the simple act of bringing myself delight. I had no idea how incredibly happy a fresh pick of flowers on my table would make me. It soon became a weekly staple added onto the grocery list. I also love to buy them from a local florist because it makes me feel satisfaction knowing I’m bringing a smile to a local business owner who has put so much time and energy into choosing and curating the array of flowers in her shop for the week. Its a win win. If you love putting your hands in the dirt growing your own flowers would be a wonderful option. It would allow you to learn a new hobby which in turn would bring you even more joy cultivating something so beautiful with your own two hands.

Obviously this isn’t just about flowers but a metaphor for life. Do the things you want to do without asking permission. Experience life even if you fear it will wilt away one day because it will anyways whether you embrace it or not.
